Why I Started Repair Shop Reckoning

I started Repair Shop Reckoning because I got tired of the noise.

Everyone in this industry blames something—dealers, aftermarket, insurance, manufacturers, the economy, techs, customers.

There’s always something to point at.

But almost nobody talks about the real issue:

The Numbers

Margins.
Pricing.
Effective labor rate.
Parts matrix.
P&L.
Profit.

It’s not sexy.
It’s not popular.

But it’s the difference between building a real business…
or slowly bleeding out.

From Mechanic To Business Owner

After signing up, I flew to Glendale, California for training.

For the next two years, we immersed ourselves in learning how to run a shop statistically. Not guessing. Not hoping. Not reacting.

We learned: True labor gross profit margins, Effective labor rate, Parts matrices, Technician productivity, Car count vs. average repair order, Expense ratios, Financial statement analysis

That education made me into the man I am today when it comes to numbers.

It’s one thing to fix cars. It’s another thing entirely to: Price jobs correctly, Protect your margins, Read a P&L accurately, Control cash flow, Build sustainable profit

That’s when I realized something that most shop owners never fully grasp:

You can be an excellent mechanic and still go broke.

Where Most Shop Owners Fall Down

Most shop owners:

Are incredible technicians, Care deeply about their customers, Work harder than anyone in the building

But they don’t truly know:

What their labor gross profit should be, Whether their effective labor rate matches their door rate, If their parts markup system is doing its job, If their labor hours sold match their payroll burden, Where their overhead is bleeding them out, Why the shop is busy… but the bank account is empty

So they spend their entire careers grinding.

Always busy — but never in control.

That’s not a work ethic problem.

That’s a numbers problem.
